Drafthouse Recommends: Boyhood — Aug 4

Featuring a pre-recorded Q&A with the cast and crew

Drafthouse Recommends · Only at the Alamo · R · 186 min

Featuring a pre-recorded Q&A with director Richard Linklater and cast members Ellar Coltrane, Patricia Arquette, and Ethan Hawke. Texas filmmaker Richard Linklater has made some of the best independent films of the last three decades. BOYHOOD might be his masterpiece. Shot over twelve years with the same cast, BOYHOOD tracks the childhood of Mason, a kid who struggles to find his place in a family that's drifting apart, in a state that's wider than most countries. As the film captures the small moments - both tragedies and triumphs of growing up - audiences will watch the actors age on screen. Ellar Coltrane, Patricia Arquette, Ethan Hawke, and Lorelei Linklater star. BOYHOOD is a funny, humane, and - most important - essential portrait of life, as only the art of cinema can capture.

A gothic grotesquery in 35mm.

Terror Tuesday · 35mm print · Only at the Alamo · NR · 135 min

Single screening — this is the kind that sells out.

Like THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE, WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE? is a portrait of a family in turmoil—and the emotional devastation is just as powerful. Ex-child star “Baby Jane” Hudson (Bette Davis) lives with her wheelchair-bound sister Blanche (Joan Crawford) in a gothic suburban mansion. Resentful of Blanche’s past success as a movie star, Jane plots a comeback by transforming her child star persona into a grotesque, homicidal caricature. Haunting, campy, and propelled by an alleged offscreen feud between Davis and Crawford that rivaled their onscreen intensity, this is mid-century horror at an unforgettable peak. Screening an archival 35mm print courtesy of Park Circus.

Part Hitchcock's 39 STEPS, part VIDEODROME, EXISTENZ is pure Cronenberg paranoia, sex panic, and body horror. New 4K restoration of Michael Mann's final cut

Terror Tuesday · Only at the Alamo · R · 122 min

Single screening — this is the kind that sells out.

A retired criminal profiler (William Petersen) reluctantly returns to the FBI to help track down a serial killer of families and is forced to consult an expert – the imprisoned Dr. Hannibal Lecktor (Brian Cox in a subtly chilling performance). The third feature written and directed by Michael Mann is a gripping adaptation of the first of Thomas Harris' four novels featuring the iconic murderer Lecktor, and benefits from the filmmaker's typically striking visuals as well as a top-notch supporting cast, including Tom Noonan as the hunted killer and three-time Oscar nominee Joan Allen as his blind love interest. This new 4K final cut, overseen by Mann, enhances the film’s depth, visual clarity and sound, offering audiences the ultimate immersive version. Shot in 1985, MANHUNTER was on a frontier in both its subject matter and film form, initiating an impressive list of subsequent films and series. (Rialto)

Sad Girl Cinema Club: The Piano — Aug 16

spotted Aug 4

Holly Hunter’s ultimate mute sad girl performance won her a much deserved Oscar

Sad Girl Cinema Club · Only at the Alamo · R · 126 min

THE PIANO centers on a mute Scottish woman, Ada McGrath (Holly Hunter), who is shipped off to rural New Zealand to marry settler Alisdair Stewart (Sam Neill). She travels with the two most important things in her life: her out-of-wedlock daughter (Anna Paquin) and the ornate piano she uses to express her feelings through. When her new husband sells her piano to a frontiersman (Harvey Keitel), Ada finds herself in an unexpected affair that leads to dark consequences. THE PIANO earned three Academy Awards: one for Hunter, one for Paquin, and one for Jane Campion (THE POWER OF THE DOG) for best screenplay. A gentle but sometimes harsh film, THE PIANO is a stunning, complex romance not unlike WUTHERING HEIGHTS. It feels deeply rooted in its time period and organic in its storytelling. Keitel and Hunter’s chemistry is lightning – a smouldering sensation that radiates through the screen. The romance Campion directs is profoundly messy, and because of that messiness, it’s profoundly beautiful.

Feed me, Seymour. Feed me all night long. Alarm goes off at seven, and you start uptown. You put in your eight hours for the powers that have always been. Ugh, ain’t that the truth, Chiffon? It’s been a hot minute since we’ve screened a musical for Queer Film Theory 101, so in honor of its 40th anniversary, we’re showing the melodic and incendiary critique of hustle culture, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, from powerhouse writing duo Howard Ashman and Alan Menken and director Frank Oz. Well ahead of its time, this film tackles hot topics like urban decay, abusive dentistry, aggressively sexual plants, and presages the rise of influencer culture. When dopey orphan-turned-beleaguered florist’s assistant Seymour (Rick Moranis) stumbles upon an exceptionally strange and exotic plant, he suddenly sees a way out of Skid Row for himself and the equally troubled object of his affection, Audrey (Ellen Green). Unfortunately for everyone involved, Seymour’s leafy meal ticket, Audrey II (Levi Stubbs), harbors murderous desires of its own, revealing itself as an extraterrestrial invader hell-bent on human domination. Featuring an all-star cast including Steve Martin, John Candy, Tisha Campbell, and Bill Murray, unforgettable songs from Ashman and Menken, and incredible puppetry from Lyle Conway (THE DARK CRYSTAL, The Muppet Show ), LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS is perhaps the perfect movie musical. Don’t argue with us. Deeply queer, filled with critiques of capitalism, and catchy as hell, we can’t wait to celebrate this iconic musical's 40th anniversary with y’all as part of Queer Film Theory 101. And just a gentle reminder: don’t feed the plants!
